University of Akron was awarded “Best Diversity” in 2012 in the field of American higher education by Insight into Diversity magazine, which was the first time for Akron. When analyzing the reasons, the commentator in school newspaper mentioned that activities “China Week” and “Rethink about Race” were two major factors.
“China Week” is a brand to introduce Chinese culture firmly supported by Confucius Institute, University of Akron, which has been held four times in October of each year. Though once a year, its preparation usually begins at January. It always takes around ten months from the first design, organization to the final practice, and has wide influence in Ohio. For instance, there were 39 Chinese culture international promotion programs in China Week 2012, including fields of Chinese politics, economy, education, history, geography, science and technology, language, calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, costume, gourmet, biology, movie, family, China-U.S. relations and so on, attracting over 4500 person-times. The speech “China-U.S. Relations in Election Year” made by the former U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman pushed the activities to its climax. Leaders of Akron said that greater effort must be given to “China Week”, and Confucius Institute should not only keep promoting the activities, but holding with higher and higher quality.
